About Us

Nandi ka Bhebhe Women’s Cooperative is a secondary cooperative that was founded on 20 January 2018 out of a shared desire of our members to participate in the South African economy.

foundations of Nandi ka Bhebhe

Our members were inspired by the story of Queen Nandi, mother to the mighty King Shaka. Nandi faced rejection and became a societal outcast. She, however, bore an heir for the king, never losing hope and never succumbing to pressure.

Nandi represents strength, influence and resilience, setting the example to millions of women that one should always maximise on one’s capabilities.

The following principles set the foundation of Nandi ka Bhebhe

Open and Voluntary Membership

Membership is open to all women, young and old, from all walks of life. It is voluntary and members can terminate their membership at any time.

Democratic Member Control

All members have an equal share in profits and have equal voting rights. The board and its subcommittees are elected by members at each annual general meeting. Members have complete control over the way they wish the cooperative to be run.

Members’ Economic Participation

Nandi ka Bhebhe was created with the primary goal of allowing its members to participate in the South African economic environment. Most of its activities are geared towards achieving this goal. Members of Nandi ka Bhebhe are able to invest in any of the organisation’s cooperatives.

Autonomy and Independence

Nandi ka Bhebhe is an autonomous organisation controlled by its members. Any agreements that it enters into with other entities (including government) are concluded on terms that ensure democratic control and maintain cooperative autonomy.

Education, Training and Information

Nandi ka Bhebhe provides education and training opportunities to its members so that they are able to start and grow their businesses as well as grow themselves on a personal level. Nandi Ka Bhebhe values and encourages the sharing of information amongst members. Various mechanisms have been established to ensure the effective communication of internal information.

Cooperation with Other Cooperatives

Nandi ka Bhebhe gains a large part of its competitive advantage from partnering with other cooperative structures (both local and international).

Concern for Community

Nandi ka Bhebhe’s main focus is the needs of its members. However, the organisation also has programmes in place for the sustainable development of South African communities. Members are encouraged to uplift their own communities as they participate in the organisation.

Our Current Projects

To date the following projects are in the pipeline (more are still to come with growth):

Ndlovukazi YakwaZulu (Women’s Financial Services Cooperative)

All members are given the opportunity to invest (R5 000) in this initiative. On 21 October, it was awarded a deposit taking license by the South African Reserve Bank and plans to commence operations on 02 March 2020.

Nandi ka Bhebhe Womens Insurance Cooperative

This is a short-term insurance organisation for our members. Members are able to invest in as many shares as they wish (R15 000 per share). The organisation is in the process of applying for a license from the South African Reserve Bank.

Nandi ka Bhebhe Womens Agricultural Cooperative

This organisation is still in its research phase.
